The last concert featuring Martin Stadtfeld in the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden was pure power. The young pianist played Wagner and Liszt, but what does “played” actually mean in this context? He conquered this music with perfect concentration, appearing not to trust his own brilliance. Here there were no circus animals on show to scatter sand in the eyes of the audience for effect. Here is a young artist who knows his Arrau and Kempff, and who realises what he owes to the music – sincerity, depth, new interpretive approaches (Stadtfeld dares to undertake great things in this regard!) – and an almost religious fervour.
