“Actually the most enjoyable time is just before you walk onto the stage, the stage door is already open, the audience can be heard waiting with excited anticipation, the orchestra is already in place and you know that it’s only a few seconds before you can finally explode” – a typical Martin Grubinger statement, taken from an unedited interview. An air of the unpolished surrounds this man, who simply bursts with creativity and is constantly full of nervous energy just waiting to be released. A “mezzo forte artform” doesn’t mean a great deal to Grubinger. He is the only percussionist to fill classical music halls. One term describes him precisely: unique artist.
