John Neumeier always knows how to surprise! With his “Liliom” he was able to create something no one expected from the choreographer – something akin to a ballet musical without words. The score was composed especially by Academy Award winner Michel Legrand, who became famous for his film scores for “Never Say Never Again” and “Yentl”, among many others. All of this is extremely elaborate – and on top the NDR Big Band comes together with a symphony orchestra for the jazz numbers. ‘Liliom is the age-old bitter sweet saga of a man given a second chance after his death and who steals a star for his wife and son. As always, Neumeier demands the utmost expression and body control from his dancers. After the premiere the “Welt” newspaper accorded the production rave reviews: “an almost perfect masterpiece, both choreographically and musically. Logical and sensitive, innovative and endearing. All involved deservedly basked in the applause!”
