Grigory Sokolov can be likened to the Loch Ness Monster – rarely showing himself but most definitely there. He has released no CD recordings, deliberately avoiding this medium for years, preferring instead to perform only live concerts. These concerts have gathered a cult following among piano lovers who can often only guess what he will play at each performance. Although his selection of works may perhaps be considered colourful, it is limited. Sokolov believes it is only possible to play a masterpiece properly after practising it for about 20 years. This master is a magician of sound. Last time Sokolov performed on stage in the Festspielhaus – works by Schumann, Schubert and Chopin – his audience felt certain they were listening to three entirely different pianos, as he skilfully exhibited a completely individual tone for each composer.
