Composer Edvard Grieg, once an audience favourite, fell out of favour and disappeared from concert programmes for a long time, having been played too often. The tide has now turned – Grieg is being re-discovered as a creator of music that hasn’t been over-polished in the name of some kind of so-called elegance. His cello sonata is simultaneously both fiery and rough, naïve in the best sense of the word, without fear of eruptive outbursts or sudden sweetness. The harmonies are surprising and the tempi extreme – perfect for Gautier Capuçon and Gabriela Montero. He is currently the best French cellist of today, whilst she is an outstanding interpreter and genius of improvisation. Here are two artists who like to take risks and constantly challenge each other to undertake new feats.
