There are many who can sing well. However, bel canto requires more than simply “nice singing”. Not every singer has the skill to start a tone softly and complete it loudly without having to resort to vibrato. Edita Gruberova is one who is blessed with this artistic and magical ability. The queen of bel canto entirely connects with this music because she doesn’t allow herself to be ambushed by its rules, and thus finds in it artistic freedom. Gruberova’s “Norma” in the Festspielhaus was a revelation. We await her undoubtedly perfect portrayal of “Alaide” with great anticipation!
