The fact that Thomas Hengelbrock – founder of the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble and Chief Conductor of the NDR Symphony Orchestra – has a close affinity with the music of Bach is well known to Festspielhaus audiences from his many concerts here. With this Christmas Oratorio, Hengelbrock will combine it with a small premiere – never before has the conductor taken this work on tour with him, despite the fact that it is amongst Bach’s best loved works. Hengelbrock gained fame for his approach and ability to read between the musical lines, opening them to constant new and exciting interpretations. So in Bach’s words, soon it is time to “triumph, rejoice” (“Jauchzet, frohlocket”) about one or more surprises.
