Anna Netrebko’s career didn’t peak overnight, as one would assume. Although loved by the greater audience, she was often not taken seriously by the operatic elite. Many thought the lady was simply too attractive, and it wasn’t believed that she could be capable of singing so beautifully! Prejudices are hard to break, however incorrect they may be. But those who experienced Netrebko in “Iolanthe” in the Festspielhaus, or heard her ‘nail’ the part in Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” will never forget what took place on that stage. Anna Netrebko is an exceptionally gifted singer who blends perfectly into every role she undertakes. She also knows how to captivate everyone, from readers of gossip magazines to serious music journals. This evening’s New Year’s Concert will see the singer joining forces with celebrated Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott.
